Hi and welcome to this blog about buying secondhand pianos - both upright and grand pianos.
In another life I'm a piano dealer and I specialise in used pianos although I do sell some new pianos.
Almost all of my customers are like you - they have no idea whether a piano is good or bad. Many of my customers come to see me because they want advice on a piano they've found on eBay or through classified adverts and they're not sure how much they should be paying for it, nor even if it's worth buying.
I know there's a lot of information online about used pianos but a lot of it is very weighted either for or against them depending on who actually wrote the article and what they are selling - a dealer selling only new pianos will rubbish a second-hand instrument because it's not in his interest to do anything else. Equally a dealer who only sells used pianos will talk them up as he wants to sell his stock as well.
So, as I sell both I think I'm less biased :) and I'm also not going to tell you the name of my business on here either. But if you really want to know, please contact me and I'll tell you privately.
I hope you find this blog helpful and I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have about buying a used piano.
Thank you.
Karen
